Clik here to view. When checking anything media related for the past few days, I’ve noticed a swirl of negativity. Which typically is not a surprise as bad news is what sells. But lately I have noticed an unusual swell of fear about this trio:
Ebola
The Stock Market
ISIS
As I was listening to a cable newscast today, I suddenly realized how easy it is to get sucked into this trap of worry. We are living in an amazing time where information (both good and bad) is flying at speeds never experienced before. Generations that came before us were not bombarded with even close to as much information to process as we are today. I can’t even imagine what its like for kids today. But in all this negative news, its important to keep some perspective.
I used to read everything I could get my hands on about investing & the stock market. Trying to find an edge that could help me learn to profit more than the average person. You know what I read now? I read about psychology. Learning about the rational (and quite often irrational) behavior in humans is a much quicker path to investment success. Its also provides quite an insight into other areas of life.
I’ve learned that most of our fears are often irrational. Worry about these perceived problems accomplishes almost nothing. I certainly don’t mean to diminish the magnitude of today’s risks, but keeping perspective is important. I choose to tune out those fears. I choose to look around and be grateful. Its truly an amazing time to be alive.
Today I watched a video lecture by a Yale Professor, teaching me a free course. I can watch this video anytime or anywhere at my leisure. I watched that video on my iPhone, which is in my opinion, the greatest invention of the past 10 years. It was transferred to me via the greatest invention of the past 20 years, the internet. Astounding.
I’m excited and optimistic for tomorrow.
